Our take

The i8 is a falling knife, and I would not catch it yet. It lost 10.3% after inflation in the last 12 months, the steepest drop of any BMW, and our fleet study flags it as the one car out of 51 significantly down in a year when 44 rose. It now sits -38.2% under its best stretch. It is a spectacular-looking carbon-tub hybrid, but a hybrid ages like a computer, not like an M car: the threads worry about AC compressors and high-voltage battery health, and the dealers still ask +24.3% over fair value with a third of their stock past 90 days.

The one to buy: a 2019 or 2020 car, the facelift with the bigger battery, which is where the money is (+30% and +51% in the guide over earlier years). An early coupe only below the $48,750 median, with battery and AC records.
